DISCOVER JOHNNY GRIFFITH
In 2103, Beth was honored to represent her father, Johnny Griffith as the legendary Motown Funk Brothers received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Some of the celebrities in attendance were Stevie Wonder and Ray Parker Jr. They joined surviving Funk Brothers – Jack Ashford, Joe Messina and Eddie Willis in the star-studded ceremony.
The Funk Brothers was a 13-member studio band of highly-talented musicians: Richard “Pistol” Allen, Jack Ashford, Bob Babbitt, William “Benny” Benjamin, Eddie “Bongo” Brown, Johnny Griffith, Joe Hunter, James Jamerson, Uriel Jones, Joe Messina, Robert White, Eddie Willis and Earl Van Dyke.
Johnny Griffith is noted as one of the few classically trained musicians who worked at Motown with music degrees from Wayne State University and University of Detroit Mercy. “Johnny had a very beautiful touch, very melodic…. especially when he did a ballad, this guy was just incredible,” said Jack Ashford.
Johnny Griffith started playing at the age of 16 with Blues recording artist, John Lee Hooker and before he signed with Motown’s ‘Workshop Jazz’ label in 1961, Griffith had already toured with Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin and Sarah Vaughan. On his return home to Detroit in November 2002, Johnny Griffith would pass away only one day before the premiere of Standing in the Shadows of Motown, a Grammy Award documentary of the musical contribution of the Funk Brothers and how the sound they created impacted and inspired a nation. Johnny Griffith was 66. Listed below are a few noted performances of Motown’s ‘’hired-gun’’ Johnny Griffith:
