Makes No Difference Who You Are, Believe
(Detroit, MI) This is the 15th year, Sharon Dumas-Pugh founder of The Curvy Girl Project has sponsored The Get Fit for Change 5K Walk/Run Against Childhood Obesity. Dumas is the CEO of the nonprofit organization, Full and Fabulous International of which The Curvy Girl Project is a part. Having experienced the death of one of their members, 17 year old Tinnay White who struggled with obesity, makes this year’s 5k Walk/Run even more important to Curvy Girl members. As they remember Tinnay, the Curvy Girl Project members are gearing-up to create awareness and continue their fight against what health and medical experts consider an epidemic – Childhood Obesity. More than 23 million children and teenagers (31.8 percent) ages two to 19 are obese or overweight (CDC 2011).
Childhood obesity is entirely preventable. It’s up to adults to encourage these healthy habits (CDC 2011). In 2010, President Obama proclaimed September as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. The Curvy Girl Project is excited to be a partner of the Let’s Move initiative to combat childhood obesity established by First Lady Michelle Obama. The Get Fit for Change 5K Walk/Run Against Childhood Obesity takes place on Saturday, September 7, 2013, 11:00am at Belle Isle Park, Shed #8 across from the Detroit Police Station and the Playscape. It is family fitness fun day with health screenings, food, music dancing and more. Dumas-Pugh says, “The growing rate of childhood obesity in Michigan and our country is alarming. National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and Full & Fabulous recognizes the serious threat obesity poses to the health of America’s children and the importance of decreasing its prevalence not only in Detroit, but across the United States. As an overweight child, I have first-hand knowledge of the negative peer pressure and inner struggles that can occur in girls. I am committed to creating awareness and doing my part here in Detroit.”
